To be fit you need to stop letting myths like these hold you back.

1. Walking is not as effective as running.
Sure, you’ll burn about twice as many calories running for 30 minutes than walking for 30 minutes. But if a runner and a walker cover the same distance, they burn about the same number of calories. So if you’re willing to take the ‘slow route,’ you’ll likely lose just as much weight. In fact, studies have proved that how long you exercise matters more than how hard you exercise.

2. Exercise increases hunger
It’s a common misconception: If you burn hundreds of calories during a workout, you’ll end up eating more. But research shows that exercise has no effect on a person’s food needs, with the exception of endurance athletes who exercise for two hours a day or more. In fact, research shows that exercise often suppresses hunger during and after the workout.

3. It doesn’t matter where your calories come from
Calories are not created equal. First, some foods (in particular, proteins) take more energy to chew, digest, metabolize, and store than others. Others (such as fats and carbohydrates) require fewer calories to digest and store. Second, different food types have different effects on your blood sugar. Refined carbohydrates (think white bread, cookies, and fruit drinks) raise blood sugar levels dramatically, which encourages fat storage, weight gain, and hunger. Fibrous foods like apples, as well as proteins, raise blood sugar less, making them friendlier to your waistline. Finally, foods that contain a lot of water, such as vegetables and soup, tend to fill the belly on fewer calories, so you’ll stop eating them way before you stop eating more calorie-dense foods.

4. Diet alone is enough for sustained weight loss
You’ll lose weight in the short term by slashing calories, but experts say exercise is what keeps pounds off for good. Exercise burns calories, of course. It also builds muscle, which takes up less space than fat. Muscle tissue also requires more calories to sustain it than fat tissue does. In other words, the more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you’ll burn at rest. In fact, some studies suggest that over the long term, if you had a choice of eating consistently less or exercising consistently more, exercise would be the better weight-loss choice.

5. There is no best time for exercise
If you’re simply walking to get healthy or take off some weight, it doesn’t matter when you do it, as long as you do it. But if you’re an athlete looking for the best-quality workout, choose the late afternoon, when body temperature is highest. Muscles are warm, reaction time is quick, and strength is at its peak. If you push yourself harder as a result, you will burn more calories.

Let鈥檚 be honest: Sometimes it鈥檚 tough to tell if your date鈥檚 just being nice or if she鈥檚 really into you. So if you need help sussing out your lady love鈥檚 true feelings, check out these pointers from Greg Hartley, former Army Special Forces interrogator and author of I Can Read You Like a Book: How to Spot the Messages and Emotions People Are Really Sending With Their Body Language. Who knew your date鈥檚 smile, complexion and even where she places her handbag can reveal whether she considers you friend or boyfriend material? Read on!

Five signs your date is into you鈥

1. She tilts her head
鈥淲hen a woman sees and feels especially comfortable with a man, she will tilt her head,鈥 Hartley says. A tilt in any direction 鈥 right, left or down 鈥 are all signs that she鈥檚 interested in getting to know you better 鈥 say, over another date.

2. She takes a sip when you take a sip
When a woman is drawn to a guy, she鈥檒l instinctively mirror his actions, Hartley says. While men do this, too, women are more likely than men to first begin the copying. What should you look for? 鈥淵ou might notice she will shift her body in the same direction as yours or take your lead for behavioral changes like, picking up a glass to drink or blinking her eyes repeatedly if you鈥檙e doing so,鈥 he suggests. If you want to test her, lean forward and see if she comes closer, too.

3. She twirls her hair
Since the beginning of time, a woman鈥檚 hair has been celebrated as a symbol of her beauty and power. And it鈥檚 true today, says Hartley: If your date begins twirling or playing with her hair while talking to you, it is a good sign she鈥檚 into you and subconsciously trying to attract you.

4. She gets a glow
While blushing often means embarrassment, don鈥檛 assume that her rosy cheeks are an indication of discomfort. When a woman is attracted to someone, blood flows to her face, causing her cheeks to get redder, Hartley explains. And if your date is smitten, he adds, her lips and even eyelids will get fuller, too.

5. Her pupils dilate
While your gaze is fixed on her, pay particular attention to her pupils, advises Hartley. 鈥淲hen a woman is attracted to a man, her pupils will dilate,鈥 he notes. 鈥淓ssentially, the body does this in order to allow itself to take in more of a good thing.鈥

鈥nd five signs your date is not into you

1. She crosses her arms
Did she assume the angry librarian stance? 鈥淲hen a woman on a date places her hands in front of her body 鈥 especially if they are crossed 鈥 she is closing herself off from the man,鈥 Hartley notes. If you get this red flag, you don鈥檛 stand a chance鈥 and she wants you to know it. 鈥淢en are not nearly as perceptive as women, so even if she鈥檚 not consciously aware of it, a woman knows her body language needs to be very loud,鈥 Hartley explains. 鈥淚n this instance, that body language reads loud and clear.鈥

2. She places her bag between you two
鈥淲hen I ask male friends how a blind date went, step-by-step, and they say鈥榮he put her bag on the table,鈥 I always know that鈥檚 a bad sign,鈥 Hartley says. If your date places her purse 鈥 a real and physical barrier 鈥 between the two of you, she鈥檚 showing she wants to create distance, he says. Not a good sign.

3. She speaks faster than an auctioneer
So she seems to love talking to you? Before you start celebrating, note the speed of her small talk. 鈥淩omantic conversation does not occur at the same speed as business conversation,鈥 Hartley says. 鈥淐onversation between two people who are attracted typically slows to about three-quarter speed and softens in tone. In fact, most emotional conversation 鈥 with the exception of when it is very hostile 鈥 is at a slowed cadence.鈥 That said, she may be nervous early in your first date, and her nerves can cause her to spit her sentences out in rapid-fire succession. But if by the end of the evening she鈥檚 still going at a rapid rate, consider it a clue that she just wants to be friends at best.

4. She offers you a chin-up smile
Though it鈥檚 tempting to interpret any old smile as a sign of interest, all smiles are not created equal. Smiles can say a lot: 鈥淚鈥檓 polite,鈥 鈥淚鈥檓 crazy about you,鈥 and, believe it or not, 鈥淚 can鈥檛 stand you.鈥 The secret to decoding what her smile really means? It鈥檚 all in the chin placement. A woman who gives you a relaxed, chin-down 鈥渟oft smile鈥 is smitten and wants you to dig her back, Hartley explains. A full-on toothpaste grin or stiff and polite smile 鈥 both of which generally involve the chin raised up 鈥 mean either, 鈥淚 like you as a friend鈥 or 鈥淚 wanna get out of here!鈥

5. She strokes her neck
If your date鈥檚 telling you she agrees that you should get together again, that鈥檚 a good sign, right? Maybe, says Hartley. 鈥淗er body language may be the key to the real truth,鈥 he says. 鈥淚f a woman is gently stroking her neck when telling you this, it may be a sign that she鈥檚 interested, but it is also known to be a sign of lying.鈥 To figure out which message she鈥檚 sending, consider the aforementioned 鈥渟he鈥檚 not into you鈥 signals. If she鈥檚 also giving you the raised-chin smile and speaking to you over a giant purse, you may want to move on to your next prospect.

Chelsea Kaplan is deputy editor of www.thefamilygroove.com and regularly appears as a guest on XM Radio鈥檚 鈥淏road Minded.鈥 Her blog, 鈥淚鈥檓 Somebody鈥檚 Mother?鈥 can be found at www.chelseakaplan.com. For the other side of this story, read 5 signs he鈥檚 into you.

You鈥檇 like to think the success of a first date is all about chemistry, connection, good conversation鈥ut sometimes, where you are and what you鈥檙e doing can play a key role in whether things go well or not. So, if you want to start a potential relationship off on good footing, please, we beg you, listen to what our 2,000 Match.com/Happen survey respondents said, and don鈥檛 take your love interest on the following dates.

1. 81% of you would avoid…family functions
Your date will be nervous enough trying to impress you 鈥 don鈥檛 make someone audition for family and friends, too. 鈥淲ho needs that pressure?鈥 says Wyatt, 32, from Lafayette, CO. 鈥淢y family is so far from normal I wouldn鈥檛 let a date near them.鈥

2. 34% of you would avoid…dance clubs

Loud music, pulsing lights, guys without shirts鈥 need we say more? 鈥淓veryone鈥檚 on the prowl. That would be very uncomfortable,鈥 explains Rosie, 31, from Modesto, CA. We have to agree.
3. 31% of you would avoid…movies

You spend two lame hours staring at a screen, not getting to know each other鈥lus there鈥檚 always a risk the flick will contain a risqu茅 scene that鈥檒l create an awkward moment. John, 28, from Boston, recalls taking a date to a David Lynch film. 鈥淗er reaction was, 鈥榃hy did you take me to this?鈥欌 he says.

4. 24% of you would avoid…sporting events
Any place that involves face paint, the wave, and angry guys screaming at the referee is no venue for a soul mate connection. William, 23, from Upland, IN also points out they don鈥檛 bring out the best in men: 鈥淕uys can seem a little too aggressive, and women might find that scary.鈥

5. 15% of you would avoid…the beach

Just because you like strolling hand in hand seaside doesn鈥檛 meet you should do it on your first meeting. Karen, 28, from Dallas, concurs. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard enough to pick out a cute little black dress,鈥 she says. 鈥淗ow do you pick out a perfect bikini?鈥

6. 15% of you would avoid…comedy shows
If the comic is bad, that lame vibe will extend to the entire evening. 鈥淐omedy is great when it鈥檚 good. But horrid when it鈥檚 bad,鈥 says Anne, 37, from Spokane, WA.

7. 13% of you would avoid鈥ini-golf
Trying to outsmart that little windmill is great fun 鈥 if you鈥檙e 10 years old. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e anything like me, you鈥檙e clumsy when you鈥檙e nervous. Bad idea for a first date!鈥 says Angie, 28, from Lima, OH.

8. 11% of you would avoid…theme restaurants
Never take a first date to a restaurant where your waiter is dressed like Chubby Checker, Fred Flintstone or Quasimodo. Beth, 32, from Brooklyn, NY, recalls her awful date at a medieval-themed restaurant. 鈥淵ou have to either pretend there aren鈥檛 people in bloomers delivering your food, or keep making jokes like, 鈥業 think I鈥檒l have the ye olde steak,鈥欌 she says.

9. 9% of you would avoid…museums
A first date is a time to kick back and relax, not solemnly contemplate the works of the great masters. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a little too much intellectual stimulation for a first date,鈥 says Amy, 27, of Cherry Hill, NJ.

10. 9% of you would avoid…coffee houses

Some people might think that meeting for coffee is an easy, breezy way to meet cute. But let鈥檚 face it: It鈥檚 hardly romantic. Or as Sandi, 40, from Tampa, FL, put it: 鈥淏orrrrring!鈥

Sara Eckel writes for Glamour, Self, and Cosmopolitan 鈥 and actually wouldn鈥檛 mind going mini-golfing on a first date.

Note: Percentages add up to more than 100% because some respondents made multiple selections.

The 2010 World Cup Final will be a groundbreaking game in more ways than one. What’s that? You want to know exactly how many ways it will be groundbreaking? You got it 鈥 here’s why Sunday’s match at Soccer City, above, will see a number of firsts…

1. This year’s final will be the first time a team from Europe wins the tournament outside of Europe. Only Brazil and Argentina have won away from their home continent.

2. This is the first final that will not feature one of Argentina, Brazil, Germany or Italy.

3. It will be Spain’s first time in the final. Their best performance so far is fourth place in the 1950 edition, and this tournament is the first since then that they have even reached the semifinals.

4. This could be the Netherlands’ first World Cup victory, if they overcome David Villa et al. They’ve been losing finalists twice.

5. If you followed the two previous points closely enough, you will see that World Cup 2010 will definitely see a first-time winner.

6. Additionally, it’s also the first time the Netherlands will not face the host nation in the final. In 1974 they lost 2-1 to West Germany in Munich, and in 1978 they succumbed to Argentina 3-1 in Buenos Aires.

7. The game will also be the first time either manager has won anything on the international stage. Bert van Marwijk has won the UEFA Cup and the Dutch version of the FA Cup with Feyenoord, and Vicente del Bosque won the Champions League, La Liga, the Supercopa de Espana, the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid.

8. It’s the first time a psychic octopus has shaped the outcome of the final. If Germany had managed to prevail over the Spanish, this would also have been the first time a mollusk would have had the chance to reveal the outcome of a final before it took place.

9. The final will be the first game in this tournament that Fernando Torres maybe thinks about possibly scoring a goal. If he plays, that is.

10. And finally, the final will give you your first chance to talk about something other then LeBron this week.

By Patricia Curtis

Can’t remember where you put your glasses? Blanked on your new
colleague’s name? “Forgetting these types of things is a
sign of how busy we are,” says Zaldy S. Tan, MD, director of
the Memory Disorders Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
in Boston. “When we’re not paying good attention, the
memories we form aren’t very robust, and we have a problem
retrieving the information later.”

The key, says Harry Lorayne,
author of Ageless Memory: Simple Secrets for Keeping Your Brain
Young, is to get your brain in shape. “We exercise our
bodies, but what good is that great body if you don’t have the
mental capabilities to go with it?” Sure, you could write
everything down, keep organized lists and leave electronic notes on
your BlackBerry, cell phone or PDA. But when you don’t have
access to those aids, or if you want to strengthen your brain, try
these expert-recommended strategies to help you remember.

PLUS: Top 10 Tips for a Healthy Brain

Brain Freeze: “What the heck is his
name?”

1. Pay attention. When you’re introduced to
someone, really listen to the person’s name. Then, to get a
better grasp, picture the spelling. Ask, “Is that Kathy with a
K or a C?” Make a remark about the name to help lock it in
(“Oh, Carpenter — that was my childhood best friend’s
last name”), and use the name a few times during the
conversation and when you say goodbye.

2. Visualize the name. For hard-to-remember
monikers (Bentavegna, Wobbekind), make the name meaningful. For
Bentavegna, maybe you think of a bent weather vane. Picture it.
Then look at the person, choose an outstanding feature (bushy
eyebrows, green eyes) and tie the name to the face. If Mr.
Bentavegna has a big nose, picture a bent weather vane instead of
his nose. The sillier the image, the better.

3. Create memorable associations. Picture Joe
Everett standing atop Mount Everest. If you want to remember that
Erin Curtis is the CEO of an architectural firm, imagine her
curtsying in front of a large building, suggests Gini Graham Scott,
PhD, author of 30 Days to a More Powerful Memory.

4. Cheat a little. Supplement these tips with some
more concrete actions. When you get a business card, after the
meeting, jot down a few notes on the back of the card (“red
glasses, lives in Springfield, went to my alma mater”) to help
you out when you need a reminder.

Download our Life IQ trivia game for your iPhone.

Brain Freeze: “Where in the world did I leave my
glasses?”

5. Give a play-by-play. Pay attention to what
you’re doing as you place your glasses on the end table. Remind
yourself, “I’m putting my keys in my coat pocket,” so
you have a clear memory of doing it, says Scott.

7.聽Make it a habit. Put a small basket on a
side table. Train yourself to put your keys, glasses, cell phone or
any other object you frequently use (or misplace) in the basket –
every time.

Brain Freeze: “What else was I supposed to do
today?”

8. Start a ritual. To remind yourself of a chore
(write a thank-you note, go to the dry cleaner), give yourself an
unusual physical reminder. You expect to see your bills on your
desk, so leaving them there won’t necessarily remind you to pay
them. But place a shoe or a piece of fruit on the stack of bills,
and later, when you spot the out-of-place object, you’ll
remember to take care of them, says Carol Vorderman, author of
Super Brain: 101 Easy Ways to a More Agile Mind.

9.聽Sing it. To remember a small group of
items (a grocery list, phone number, list of names, to-do list),
adapt it to a well-known song, says Vorderman. Try “peanut
butter, milk and eggs” to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle,
Little Star,” “Happy Birthday” or even nursery
rhymes.

World

10. Try mnemonic devices. Many of us learned
“ROY G BIV” to remember the colors of the rainbow, or
“Every Good Boy Deserves Favors” to learn musical notes.
Make up your own device to memorize names (Suzanne’s kids are
Adam, Patrick and Elizabeth, or “APE”), lists (milk,
eggs, tomatoes, soda, or “METS”) or computer commands (to
shut down your PC, hit Control+Alt+Delete, or “CAD”).

11. Use your body. When you have no pen or paper
and are making a mental grocery or to-do list, remember it
according to major body parts, says Scott. Start at your feet and
work your way up. So if you have to buy glue, cat food, broccoli,
chicken, grapes and toothpaste, you might picture your foot stuck
in glue, a cat on your knee looking for food, a stalk of broccoli
sticking out of your pants pocket, a chicken pecking at your belly
button, a bunch of grapes hanging from your chest and a toothbrush
in your mouth.

Enhance your IQ with our new Word Power game!

12.聽Go Roman. With the Roman room technique,
you associate your grocery, to-do or party-invite list with the
rooms of your house or the layout of your office, garden or route
to work. Again, the zanier the association, the more likely
you’ll remember it, says Scott. Imagine apples hanging from the
chandelier in your foyer, spilled cereal all over the living room
couch, shampoo bubbles overflowing in the kitchen sink and cheese
on your bedspread.

Brain Freeze: “What’s my password for this
website?”

13. Shape your numbers. Assign a shape to each
number: 0 looks like a ball or ring; 1 is a pen; 2 is a swan; 3
looks like handcuffs; 4 is a sailboat; 5, a pregnant woman; 6, a
pipe; 7, a boomerang; 8, a snowman; and 9, a tennis racket. To
remember your ATM PIN (4298, say), imagine yourself on a sailboat
(4), when a swan (2) tries to attack you. You hit it with a tennis
racket (9), and it turns into a snowman (8). Try forgetting that
image!

14.聽Rhyme it. Think of words that rhyme with
the numbers 1 through 9 (knee for 3, wine for 9, etc.). Then create
a story using the rhyming words: A nun (1) in heaven (7) banged her
knee (3), and it became sore (4).

Brain Freeze: “The word is on the tip of my
tongue.”

15. Practice your ABCs. Say you just can’t
remember the name of that movie. Recite the alphabet (aloud or in
your head). When you get to the letter R, it should trigger the
name that’s escaping you: Ratatouille. This trick
works when taking tests too.

Brain Freeze: “I just can’t memorize anything
anymore!”
